Gray awoke to the sound of birds chirping and the summer breeze rustling through the treetops . He rubbed his eyes with his good hand before stretching carefully, glad he hadn't rolled over his broken arm in his sleep. That would have been unpleasant to wake up to.

Yesterday's events played in his mind, making him frown. He needed to find a way to the others, somehow...

Gray sighed, looking out at the entrance to the lean-to.

Right. First things first...

Grunting as he stood out of bed, Gray made his way out of the shelter and analyzed his surroundings. (Name) was nowhere to be seen, with no traces of her presence anywhere except for the campfire that crackled in its pit.

"Great. Now what?" he muttered. With a busted arm, he wasn't capable of doing much on his own. Perhaps now would be a good time to test out his magic...

Gray closed his eyes, trying to focus, but was cut off by the white hot pain from before suddenly returning in his abdomen. He grit his teeth in both pain and irritation.

"Crap..." he muttered. "This is gonna be a problem."

A sudden tap on his shoulder startled him, causing him to whip around and nearly throw a punch at whomever was behind him. His fist froze when he realized who it was.

"Oh...(Name)...Jeez, you scared me." he sighed, relaxing. (Name) just shrugged and smiled.

"Where were you?" he asked. (Name) lifted one arm, revealing freshly caught fish hanging from hooked strings.

"Oh...breakfast." Gray mumbled. (Name) nodded, heading for the fire. She reached for a series of sharpened sticks that lay near the fire pit, sticking them in the ground with pointed ends facing towards the flames. Gray watched with casual interest.

"So what's the plan for today?" he asked, rubbing his injured abdomen. (Name) looked at him as she speared a fish onto one of the stakes and tilted it towards the fire. She shook her head and shrugged, making him groan. "Great..."

(Name) bit her lip, turning back towards their breakfast. Gray sighed before sitting near the fire across from (Name).

Silence ensued, rendering the situation awkward. Gray swatted at his back when he felt something crawl on it.

The journal from last night landed at his feet, and Gray blinked before picking it up and turning to the latest entry.

Sorry I didn't tell you where I was, but I didn't want to wake you up.. You seemed quite tired.

Gray shook his head, tossing the journal back.

"It's fine."

(Name) eyed him from under her shaggy bangs, as if gauging his mood. He stared back at her.

"What?" he asked gruffly. (Name)'s barely visible gaze flickered to his abdomen. She scribbled more words on the pages before showing it to him.

How are your injuries?

Gray shrugged, but groaned.

"Still there. They don't hurt as badly as before, but they're there." he grumbled. (Name) nodded solemnly. She paused in thought before writing more.

Alright. I'll prepare more pain medicine after breakfast.

Gray blinked.

"You make your own medicine?" he asked, impressed. (Name) smiled faintly.

When you live out here, you have no other choice. And the forest offers many  necessities if you know where to look. She looked back towards the fire and rotated the fish. The smell of cooked food wafted through the air, making Gray's stomach rumble and mouth water in anticipation.

Soon enough, the fish finished cooking, and breakfast was ready. (Name) removed the sticks from the edge of the pit and handed one to Gray, nodding. He held it in his good hand and eyed the fish hungrily. Unable to wait any longer, he dug in. It was pretty simple-tasting, but to his empty stomach it mattered little. He looked over at (Name), who carefully ate her own fish at a leisurely pace. Gray grunted and continued eating.

No more words, spoken or written, were exchanged for the rest of the meal.

********************************************************************************

"So where exactly am I?" Gray asked. (Name) looked up at  him from her empty stick before tossing it into the fire. Picking up the journal and opening it to a new page, she made her reply.

You're in the forest. Isn't that obvious? she wrote, confusion settling across her face. Gray rolled his eyes.

"I can see that, but what's the name of this place? Where's the nearest town?"

Town?

"Yes, please. My friends and I got separated yesterday while we were on our way to some town for a job. I need to find them. Please, it's important." he insisted. He didn't have any clue whether or not his friends were safe or alright, due to his rather dramatic parting from them. He needed to be sure that they were ok before anything else.

(Name) hesitated before writing her next words.

I've never left the forest. My father might have, but he is no longer among us... I'm ashamed to admit it, but I wouldn't know anything about any "towns."

Gray's lip nearly twitched into a snarl as he fought down the urge to yell out of frustration. This situation just took a turn for the worse, if at all possible.

"Perfect. JUST perfect." he snapped. (Name) flinched away as he abruptly stood to his feet, stomping back towards the lean-to. He sat down on the cot, cradling his head in his good hand as he carefully tucked his injured arm between his abdomen and drawn up knees. The new-found stress gave him a headache as he sighed.

Getting angry about it isn't going to do you any good, dummy... he mentally berated himself. Especially getting mad at the person who saved your butt and gave you food and shelter when they could have left you for dead.

The sound of approaching footsteps caught his attention, causing him to look up. (Name) silently sat down next to him, crossing her legs and resting her elbows on her knees. Gray peered at her from the corner of his eye, waiting to see what she would do next. (Name) bit her bottom lip before handing him the journal.

I put some thought into it...perhaps if we returned to where I found you, we could backtrack to where you and your friends were separated. Then maybe we could find them. I could take you there.

Gray, astounded by this proposition, fully turned to look at her, eyes wide.

"Really?" he questioned, stubbornly ignoring the fact that he probably sounded desperate. (Name) nodded, writing more words on the paper.

Really. We'd need to take a quick stop before we left for good, but I'll try to help in any way I can. You can't exactly do much for yourself yet with that arm.

Gray scowled.

"I'm injured, not helpless." he muttered. (Name) quickly scribbled more words out on paper.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to be rude. As you can probably guess, I'm not really used to talking with people.

Gray paused before sighing.

"Don't worry about it. I see where your coming from. How long do you think it will take for us to make the trip?"

I found you washed up on the shore of the river nearby. It's about a ten minute walk to get there. However, it is impossible for me to tell how much time it will take for the trip as a whole currently. I don't know how you ended up in the river in the first place...

Gray nodded, shifting in his spot to get more comfortable for what was sure to be a long story.

"Right. I never really introduced myself, did I?" he began. (Name) paused before nodding. He continued.

"Well then,  let me get started. My name is Gray Fullbuster, from Magnolia Town..."

(Name) listened eagerly as he spoke, hanging onto every detail as he explained what happened. He took brief moments to pause, whether it be to catch his breath or answer her occasional question. ( The concept of last names seemed to confuse and/or fascinate her, along with the way he described his teammates as "irritating and weird as all hell but irreplaceable.") Eventually he began to talk about the guild and his mage friends at Fairy Tail, along with magic as a whole before she stopped him there.

What is a mage? What is a guild?

Gray's jaw dropped as he stared at her.

"You don't know what mages are? Or wizard guilds? Are you serious!?"

...Am I supposed to? (Name) sheepishly inquired, head sinking down in embarrassment. Gray blinked, utterly taken aback.

"...I guess I'll take a break from the story and get you up to speed here..." he said simply. He pointed to the guild mark on his chest.

"This here is a guild mark. All mages and wizards that belong to a guild have them as a sign of membership and loyalty. Guilds are places of refuge and shelter for us. Guild members are like one big family, at least at Fairy Tail, which is my guild. One big, rowdy, slightly dysfunctional family..." he muttered the last sentence before continuing. "Some of us group together in teams to complete missions or requests from people who need our help. We often get rewards for doing so, which helps us make a living. We use all different kinds of magic to complete these missions, hence the term "mage." My specialty is ice magic."

(Name)'s eyes widened in awe at the mention of magic.

You can do magic? Really?? she practically scribbled. Gray gave a lopsided smirk.

"Yep. Ever since I was a kid."

...You were a baby goat? (Name) asked, confusion settling across her face.

"No, I-" he began before sighing, pinching the bridge of his nose in exasperation. "Let me rephrase: Ever since I was young, how 'bout that?"

(Name) nodded in understanding.

"Good. Now then, as I was saying..."

Gray continued on, giving short explanations of all the different kinds of magic his teammates could use before elaborating on guild life a little while longer. After that, he started retelling the story of the latest mission he and the others had accepted, about how they had been on their way to a town somewhere in the mountains before being attacked out of nowhere by a giant, reptilian creature. (Name) seemed to freeze in shock at the mention of the monstrous lizard. A thought suddenly occurred to Gray. Perhaps he could dig up some information pertaining to the mission, even in his current circumstances.

"Hey...You've lived out here your whole life, you said?"

Yes, why?

"Have you noticed anything strange recently? Like a giant, angry lizard, for instance?"

(Name) shook her head.

I assure you, if I had seen something like that, I'd have told you. But something has been spooking the animals lately. It's getting harder to find game...even the birds have been disappearing. And the weather's been off as well...Fog rolls in at the oddest of times and then disappears almost as quickly as it comes. she explained. Gray's eyebrows knit together.

"When did it start?"

It's been occurring for quite some time, actually. But it only became this noticeable recently...It's hard to measure time out here...but I'd say it's been at least two months.

"...I see. Thank you." he said finally. (Name) nodded slowly.

Now then, please continue...

*Meanwhile, in another part of the forest....*

"Oooh....I hate this!" Lucy all but whined as she held Happy close to her chest. The blue cat nodded nervously as the two glanced around, taking in the eerie silence of the forest. The duo had been separated from Natsu and Erza in the chaos, and found themselves lost in the woods. A bad situation, indeed.

"Ok, Lucy. Suck it up! You've dealt with all kinds of creeps and disgusting monsters! This is nothing! This is nothing but trees and bushes...and all kinds of creepy crawlies... and possibly man-eating beasties..." she said to herself, starting out strong only for her voice to shrink to barely a squeak. Happy shivered in her arms.

"Y-you don't think that we could run into something dangerous, do you?" he asked timidly.

"Pssh! Don't be silly, Happy! What could possibly-"  Suddenly, the bushes nearby began to rustle, shaking violently as their trembling intensified. The celestial wizard and flying cat froze.

Whatever was hidden inside the leaves leaped out at them.

"AAAAAAAAIEEEEE!" they screeched, hugging each other for dear life as they braced themselves for doom.

"Lucy! Happy! I finally found you!" Natsu exclaimed excitedly, embracing the both of them in a tight hug. Both Lucy and Happy stared at him with wide eyes as they gasped for breath, trying to calm their hearts.

"I was worried when I couldn't find either of you near the train. I've been searching all night-"

Lucy slugged him in the face and kneed him in the stomach, making him let go and stagger backwards until he fell on his back.

"YOU IDIOT! WHY'D YOU JUMP OUT LIKE THAT!? ARE YOU TRYING TO GIVE US A HEART ATTACK!?"

Natsu gurgled from his position in the dirt, with Happy worriedly fluttering above him.

"Dummy..." he mumbled, sweat dropping.

Erza sighed irritably as she waited. After helping escort all the train passengers to the safety of the nearest train stop, which had not been that far away, Natsu had gone off on his own in search of the others. He had yet to return after being gone for hours, and the redhead was becoming impatient, as well as bored with waiting at the isolated train stop. Not to mention that they were still far away from their mission's destination. She sighed again.

This is taking too long. I better go find all those idiots myself.

Brow creased in determination, Erza began her journey back down towards the train, which had been left behind a few miles away. It was the best place to start.

*Deep within the forest...*

Gray sighed as soon he was done, feeling a little bit better now that he had finally told someone everything that had transpired in the past few hours. (Name) blinked from underneath her bangs as all this new information settled in her brain.

Now I understand why you are so desperate. I apologize for misunderstanding or underestimating your troubles.

Gray blinked.

"What do you mean?" he inquired, confused. (Name)'s mouth twisted into a sheepish grin.

...When you first woke up, I thought you were a little...shall we say...soft in the head? I figured you might have hit your head in the river at some point.

Gray flushed, sputtering.

"Hey! I was disoriented, injured, and didn't have a clue where I was! Cut me some slack here!" he exclaimed. "And what was with the needle in between the eyes, anyway? Completely unnecessary!"

Nerve and pressure points in the body can be taken advantage of for many different reasons. Muscle relaxation was what I was looking for. She took the opportunity to look up at him from her writing, a deadpan look on her face. Besides, I would not have had to if you had just drank the medicine to begin with. Gray narrowed his eyes, but his still flushed cheeks rendered the expression weak.

"I didn't know what it was. For all I knew it could've been poison." he retorted. (Name) frowned.

If I wanted you dead, I could have left you on the river bank for animals to find. I would not have gone to the trouble of bringing you to my shelter. she countered. Gray was silent. She had a point there.

"...Alright. Well, I apologize for my misgivings, and I appreciate your help. Really." he sighed. (Name) gave him a slight smile.

Don't thank me yet. Thank me when we find your friends and get you back home.

For the first time in the past hours, Gray felt reassured, and smiled back.
